第４章 竜はやがて巣立ちを迎える その２
Chapter 4 Dragon will soon leave the nest 2
次の日の朝は灰色の雲が空を隙間なく塞いでいた。雨こそ降らぬものの、大気はじっとりと湿気を含んでいる。
The next morning, gray clouds were blocking the sky. Although it doesn't rain, the atmosphere is still moist.
私はユグドラシルに「行ってくる」と告げると、寝床の材料は午後にでも探すことにし、まずはハーピーの里へと向かうことにした。
When I told Yggdrasil, "I'm going," I decided to search for bed materials in the afternoon, and headed to Harpy Village.
ハーピーの里は世界樹から見て南の山岳地帯に位置している。ラミアの住む北の泉とは真逆の方角だ。
Harpy no Sato is located in the mountainous area south of the World Tree. It is in the opposite direction to the north fountain where Lamia lives.
当初は毎朝ラミアの元へ食料を運ぶつもりだったのだが、蛇種であるラミアは食いだめの利く生き物らしく、あれだけの量を食べれば２週間は何も食べる必要はないと彼女は言った。
Initially, she intended to bring food to Lamia every morning, but the snake species Lamia seems to be a devastating creature, and she said she wouldn't have to eat anything for two weeks if she had eaten that much.
『ならば１週間後にまた来よう』と約束すると、ラミアは不意を突かれたような顔を見せた後、深々と頭をさげた。

さて、ラミアとの約束は一週間後であるし、今はもう一つの約束を果たすべく、ハーピーの里へと降り立った。

ハーピーとは群れを作る種族であり、里は小さな集落を形成している。

何の前触れもなく里に訪れた私を、ハーピー達は悲鳴と恐慌で出迎えた。
The harpies screamed and greeted me as I visited the village without warning.
迂闊だった。ハーピーは先代の竜の好物である。
It was a detour. Harpies are a favorite of predecessor dragons.
逃げ惑い、あるいは恐怖に震え動けなくなったハーピー達に、驚かせて済まなかったと頭を下げ、友人に会いに来ただけなのだと弁明した。
The harpies, who were evading or unable to tremble with fear, bowed their heads and said they were just surprised and just came to see a friend.
一番近くにいたハーピーに『歌えないハーピーの娘はどこにいる？』と尋ねると、ガクガクと震えながらも、里から外れた方角を指差した。

私は彼女に礼を言い、震える指の示す方向へと飛び去った。

ハーピーの里から４キロほど離れた場所に、布と木でつくられたゲルのような小屋をみつけた。
I found a gel-like hut made of cloth and wood about 4 kilometers away from Harpy Village.
山に囲まれて日陰となり、小さな湿地帯となっているその場所は、決してハーピーが好んで住むような場所ではなかったが、他に家らしきものは辺りには見つからなかった。
Surrounded by mountains and shaded by a small swamp, it wasn't the place Harpy likes to live in, but no other home-like thing was found.
家の中に生き物の気配を感じた私は、まずは家の入り口を探してみた。
Feeling the living things inside the house, I first searched for the entrance to the house.
どうやら布の合わせ目が入り口となっているようだが、扉も呼び鈴もない玄関ではノックのしようもない。
It seems that the seams of the cloth are the entrances, but at the entrance without doors or doorbells, there is no way to knock.
鍵などない故、めくるだけで簡単に開けられるものではあるのだが、女性の家を断りもなく覗くような真似は許されぬだろう。

私は声をだしてハーピーの少女を呼んでみることにした。

私は先日そうしたように彼女の頭に指を乗せると、意思のみで言葉を交わしていく。
When I put my finger on her head like I did the other day, I exchanged words only by intention.
「（約束しただろう？ 雲の彼方まで連れて行くと、今から空へと遊びにいかぬか？）」
"(Have you promised? If I take you to the other side of the cloud, why not go to the sky now?)"
ハーピーの少女は一寸目を大きく見開いたあと、小さな林檎のような笑顔を浮かべると
A harpy girl opens her first eye wide and then smiles like a little apple
「（はいっ）」
と、元気よく答えてくれた。
Answered me cheerfully.
ハーピーは準備をしたいから１０分ほど待ってくれないかと、私に尋ねた。もちろんだと答えると、彼女はそのまま、亀のように頭を家の中へ引っ込めた。
Harpy asked me if I could wait 10 minutes because I wanted to get ready. Answering yes, she retracted her head into the house, just like a turtle.
小屋の中から、再びバタバタと慌しい羽音が聞こえ始める。
From the inside of the hut, the fluttering noises of fluttering again begin to be heard.
１０分たち、もう１０分たち、さらに１０分ほど経ったあと、ハーピーはようやく小屋から現れた。
After 10 minutes, another 10 minutes, and another 10 minutes, Harpy finally emerged from the hut.
遅くなってしまったことを懸命にわびる少女に、謝るのは何の前触れもなくやってきた私の方であると謝罪した。

ハーピーの少女は薄い橙色のテュニカを纏っていた。

彼女の空色の髪によく似合う淡い色合いのものだ。幾分古そうではあるが汚れのない服は、大事に扱われていたことが伺われた。
It is a pale shade that looks good on her sky blue hair. It seems that clothes that look somewhat old, but clean, were treated carefully.
『とてもよく似合っているな』と伝えると、ハーピーの少女ははにかみながら、母にもらったものだと嬉しそうに答えた。

服は雲の上を飛ぶにはどうにも薄すぎるものではあったが、彼女の笑顔を見ると、水をさすのは野暮に思えた。
Her clothes were just too thin to fly above the clouds, but when I saw her smile, it seemed like nourishment to pour water.
それに寒さなどなんということもない。上空の冷たい空気と風など、私の無尽の魔力で防いでしまえば事足りるのだから。
And there's nothing cold. It would be sufficient if I could prevent the cold air and wind in the sky with my inexhaustible magic.
「（では、ゆくか。しっかりと捕まっていなさい）」
"(Well, let's go. Hold on tight)"
ハーピーが首の後ろにきゅっとしがみついたのを確認すると、曇天の空へとむかって羽ばたいた。
After seeing Harpy clinging tightly to his back, he fluttered into the cloudy sky.
大地はみるみる遠ざかり、雲がどんどんと近づいてくる。
The earth is moving away, and the clouds are getting closer and closer.
「（すごい！ すごい！ 速い！ 高い！）」
"(Wow! Wow! Fast! High!)"
ハーピーの声ならぬ声が伝わってくる。
A voice other than Harpy's voice is heard.
思考を伝えて会話をする我らの間には、嘘など存在する隙間はない。ハーピーの少女は私の背に乗った飛翔を、心のそこから楽しんでいた。
There is no gap, such as a lie, between us who convey thoughts and talk. The Harpy girl enjoyed the flight on my back from the heart.
ハーピーという種族は、真っ白で美しく輝く羽を持っている。しかしその翼は体の割には小さなもので、長時間空を飛ぶことはできない。
The harpy race has pure white and beautifully shining wings. However, its wings are small for the body and cannot fly in the sky for a long time.
また、私のように魔力も合わせて飛ぶような技を持っているわけでもない。
Nor does it have the ability to fly with magical power like I do.
これほどの高さから大地を見下ろすのは初めての経験なのだろう。

私はさらに高く飛ぶと、空に広がる灰色の雲の壁に躊躇うこと無く飛び込んだ。ハーピーは一層強く私の首にしがみつく。
When I flew even higher, I jumped into the wall of the gray clouds in the sky without hesitation. The harpy clings more strongly to my neck.

そして厚い雲の層を抜けたとき。空は一転して晴れ渡っていた。
And when I passed through the thick cloud layer. The sky turned around and was clear.
眼下にはもはや地上は見えず、広大な雲の海が広がっている。太陽は真上に強く輝き、灰色に思えた雲の海を真っ白に染め上げている。
The ground can no longer be seen below, and a vast sea of clouds is spreading. The sun is shining strongly right above, and the sea of clouds that seemed to be gray is dyed white.

その光景にハーピーの少女はただ、ぽかんとなっていた。

私は少しだけ悪戯をしたくなり、体を翻し雲の海へと再び飛び込んだ。

ハーピーから「（きゃっ）」という悲鳴が伝わってくる。そしてまた雲の上に出たあとに、私たちは大いに笑い始めた。

ハーピーの少女は声を上げることはできなかったが、私が彼女の分も笑った。
The Harpy girl couldn't speak up, but I laughed at her.
友達と遊ぶことはなんと楽しい事だろう。友達と笑い合うことはなんと幸せなことだろう。
How fun it is to play with friends! How happy it is to laugh with friends!
それから私達は、２・３時間ほど空の遊泳を楽しんだ。
Then we enjoyed swimming in the sky for a couple of hours.

太陽が僅かに地平線の方へ傾き始めたころ、われらはようやくハーピーの家へと帰って来た。
When the sun began to slightly tilt toward the horizon, we finally returned to Harpy's house.
ハーピーの少女は今なお私の首にしがみつき、興奮交じりになんども「（楽しかった）」と繰り返していた。彼女の素直な心の声に、誘って本当によかったと思えた。
The Harpy girl was still clinging to my neck, and with excitement repeated "(it was fun)". It seemed to me that she was really happy with her honest voice.
別れを告げようとすると、昼食に誘われてしまった。作りおきの山菜のスープがあるらしい。
When I tried to say goodbye, I was invited to lunch. It seems that there is a specially made wild vegetable soup.
歌で獲物を誘うことのできない彼女は、専ら山菜や木の実をとって暮らしているそうだ。
She can't invite her to prey by singing, so she lives exclusively on wild plants and nuts.
今まで食べたことのない食事には少し興味を引かれはしたが、私は彼女の申し出を固辞した。
I was a little interested in a meal I had never eaten, but I declined her offer.
彼女にとっては鍋いっぱい分のスープでも、私には匙一杯分の量にもなりはしない。
For her, a pot of soup is not enough for me.
彼女の貴重な食料を奪う事はできない。
You cannot rob her of her valuable food.
わたしはそろそろ寝床の材料を探しにいかねばならないからと、断りを入れた。
I refused because I had to find a material for my bed soon.
「（寝床？）」
"(bed?)"
いまだ首にしがみついたままの彼女は私に問うた。
Still clinging to her neck, she asked me.
…ふむ。山で山菜や木の実をとって暮らしている彼女なら、あるいは寝床にちょうど良い材料をしっているかもしれぬ。
…HM. If she lives in the mountains with herbs and nuts, she may know the right ingredients for her bed.
「（今新しい巣を作っていてな。何かよいものを知らないか？）」
"(I'm building a new nest now. Don't you know something good?)"
ハーピーの少女はしばし考えた後、
After thinking for a while the harpy girl,
「（そうだっ、あれなら竜さんの寝床にぴったりかも！）」
"(Yes, that might be the perfect bed for Ryu-san!)"
と、答えた。
I replied.

ハーピーの里からいくらか離れた赤い峡谷。
A red canyon some distance from Harpy's Village.
地割れが作る裂け目の中、日の光が微かにしか届かぬ場所へと私達は降り立った。
In the crevice created by the crevice, we landed in a place where the light of the sun could only reach a tiny amount.
まるで洞窟ような渓谷を、奥へ奥へと歩をすすめると、ぽっかりと開けた空間に辿り着いた。
As I walked the valley, which looked like a cave, back and forth, I reached a space that was open.
その中央に、傘のような形をした巨大な物体が鎮座していた。
In the center of it was a huge object shaped like an umbrella.
「‥これはまさか、オオザルのコシカケか？」
私の問いかけに首にしがみついていたハーピーは肯定の意をつたえてきた。
Harpy, clinging to my neck, gave a positive affirmation.
オオザルのコシカケとよばれるそれはキノコの一種である。毒こそないものの、味も栄養もなく食用には適さない。
It is a kind of mushroom, which is called the mosquito's moss. It is not poisonous, but neither taste nor nutrition, so it is not edible.
しかし削れば火種として使用できるためこの島の亜人達に重宝されている。
However, it can be used as a kind of fire if it is scraped, so it is useful for the sub-people of this island.
大きいものは牛程のサイズにもなるそうだが、目の前のそれは牛どころではない、私の巨体よりもさらに大きい。

「一体どれほどの時間、ここで生きていたのであろうな…」

独り言ではあったが、ハーピーは「（解らない）」と、律儀に答えてくれた。

オオザルノコシカケはとっくの昔に枯れていたのだろう、日の射さぬ場所にもかかわらず、すっかり乾ききっていた。
The mosquitoes may have died long ago, even though they were not exposed to the sun, they were completely dry.
おそらくは、この峡谷の中で誰にもみつかることはなく、何百年ものあいだ生きていたに違いない。
Probably no one has been found in this canyon and must have been alive for hundreds of years.
わたしはそれを両手で持ち上げてみる。なんの抵抗もなく岩からはがれたオオザルノコシカケは、驚くほど軽かった。
I try to lift it with both hands. The mosquitoes that peeled off the rocks without any resistance were surprisingly light.
ためしにその上に寝転んでみたのだが、私の巨体をなんなく支え、かつ適度な柔軟さと反発性をもち、その使い心地には、思わず感歎の声を上げずにはいられなかった。
I tried to lie on it for a while, but it gave me some support for my giant body, had moderate flexibility and resilience, and I could not help but feel the joy of using it.
何も手を加えなくとも、寝床としてこれ以上のものはない。
There is nothing better than a bed without any modification.
私の体に合うだけの巨大な寝床をつくるには、いったい何日もの間、島の中を材料をもとめてさまよわねばならぬのかと考えていたが、まさか一日で最高の寝床を手に入れられるとは思ってもみなかった。
I was wondering if I had to wander around the island for many days to find a huge bed that fits my body. I never thought I could put it in.
「素晴らしい寝床だよ。ありがとう、ハーピー」
"Great bed. Thank you, harpy."
私はハーピーに礼を言う。
I thank Harpy.
ハーピーはパクパクと口を動かしながら、今日一番の笑顔を私に見せてくれた。
Harpy fluttered and showed me the best smile today.

「まあ、同居人さんよりも大きなオオザルノコシカケですか？ それは本当に珍しいものを見つけられましたね」
"Well, is it a bigger mosquito than my cohabitant? I found something really unusual."
夕食の後、いつものようにユグドラシルに今日の出来事を語る。
After dinner, as usual, tell Yggdrasil about what happened today.
ユグドラシルは、時に驚き、時に相槌を打ち、私の話を楽しそうに聞いてくれるのだ。
Yggdrasil is sometimes amazed, sometimes awkward, and happily listens to my story.
ユグドラシルと初めて出会ったあの日からわずか４日。しかし私にとって、彼女とのこのひとときは、何事にも変えられない大切で穏やかな時間となっていた。
Only 4 days since I first met Yggdrasil. But for me, this moment with her was an important and calm time that I could not change anything.
「本当によい寝床を見つけられましたね。きっとオオザルノコシカケさんも喜んでいるのではないでしょうか。枯れてもなお、誰かの為にあることができるというのは、私もとても素敵なことだと思いますから」
"I was able to find a really good bed. I am sure that Mr. Osaru no Shikake would be pleased. It is very nice that I can be there for someone even when I die. I think."
死してもなお、誰かの役に立つことができる‥か、それは確かに素晴らしいことなのかもしれない。
Even if you die, you can still help someone... or maybe it's great.
オオザルノコシカケは既に新しい巣に運んでしまっていたが、明日にでもユグドラシルに一度見せに来ようか。
I have already carried the mosquitoes to the new nest, but should I come to see Yggdrasil once tomorrow?
ユグドラシルはもちろんのこと、きっとオオザルノコシカケも喜んでくれるのではないだろうか。
Not to mention Yggdrasil, I'm sure that it will surely be pleased with the giant moss.
ユグドラシルの優しい視点は、世界が優しさに溢れていることを教えてくれる。
Yggdrasil's gentle point of view tells us that the world is full of kindness.
もしも、私が彼女に出会わなければ、私の世界は今程光り輝いてはいなかっただろう。
If I hadn't met her, my world would not be as bright as it was.
「‥でも、随分早く寝床が見つかりましたね。明日にでも新しい巣に引越してしまわれるのですか？」
"But you found your bed quite early. Will you move to a new nest tomorrow?"
ユグドラシルの言葉に私はハッとなった。
Yggdrasil's words made me nervous.
そうだ、寝床を見つけたということは、私の巣も完成したということではないか。
Well, finding a bed does not mean that my nest has been completed.
一人で住み始めれば、このユグドラシルとの暖かな時間も今日で最後となるであろう。
If you start living alone, this warm time with Yggdrasil will be the end today.
いや、巣はまだ完成ではないはずだ。私は再び、ぐるぐると頭を巡らせる。
No, the nest shouldn't be complete yet. I spin around my head again.
何かあるはずだ。何かがまだ足りないはずだ。
There must be something. Something should still be missing.
何か…、何か…、巣に必要なものとは一体何だ？ 寝床の他に………。
What...what?...what exactly is the nest? Besides the bed...
寝床…ねどこ…どこ…どこ…どこ…どれ…どあ…ドア…とびら、……扉！
Bedding...Where...Where...Where...Where...Which...Well...Door...Door...Door!

「そうだ、扉だ！ 扉がひつようなのだ！」
"Yes, it's a door! It's like a door!"
舞い降りた閃きを、私は叫んだ。
I shouted at the flash of light.

「‥ええっと、扉、ですか？」
"Um, is it a door?"
うむ。と、頷くことで肯定する。
Umu. I affirm by nodding.
竜の巣というのは、財宝でうめつくされるものである。
A dragon's nest is one that is filled with treasure.
私自身は金銀財宝などには興味はないし、これからも集めるつもりもないのだが、先代の竜が集めた宝を放置しておくわけにはいかぬだろう。
I myself have no interest in gold and silver treasures, and I will not collect them in the future, but I cannot leave the treasures collected by the previous dragon.
富は争いを引き起こす。他の生き物の目につかぬよう、財宝は新しい巣に運んでおくべきだ。ならば扉の一つもなければ、オチオチも外出もできぬではないか。
Wealth causes conflict. The treasure should be carried to a new nest so that it will not be seen by other creatures. Then, without one of the doors, I can't go out and go out.
私は、彼女にそう伝えた。うむ、実に完璧な理論である。
I told her so. Umm, it's a perfect theory.
「留守とはいえ、竜の巣に近づく生き物などいないような気もしますが…、でも、用心はしすぎるに越したことはないといいますものね！」

と、ユグドラシルも賛同してくれた。

「ふふふっ、では、玄関が完成するまで、またよろしくおねがいしますね。同居人さん」

こうして私は巣立ちの日まで、また暫くの猶予を得ることとなった。
In this way, I got another grace period until the day of my leave.
それにしても、なぜ私は、こんなにもこの場所を離れたくないのだろうか。
But why don't I want to leave this place so much?

今日は大樹のうろに背中をぴったりとつけて眠ることにした。
Today, I decided to sleep with Taiki's back on my back.

血の通っていないはずの彼女の体が、なぜかとても暖かく感じた。
