変わった蝉がいた。
There was a strange cicada.
その蝉は何よりも変わっていたが、誰もそれに気付かなかった。
The cicada had changed above all, but nobody noticed it.
この世界に何億匹といる蝉の、たった一匹の不審な挙動など、誰の興味も惹かなかった。
The suspicious behavior of the hundreds of millions of cicadas in this world did not appeal to anyone.
変わっていたのは、鳴かないこと。
What has changed is that it does not ring.
蝉のくせに鳴かなかった。雄のくせに鳴かなかった。
It didn't sound like a cicada. It didn't sound like a male.
求愛の歌を、生涯で一度も歌わなかった。
I never sang a courtship song in my lifetime.
蝉はただ、飛び回っていた。
The cicada was just flying around.
木から木へ、樹液を僅かに舐めとると、すぐにまた別の木へと移っていった。
When I licked the sap slightly from tree to tree, it immediately moved to another tree.
まるで自分にとっての、たった一本を探しているかのように

その蝉は、短い生を小さな羽ばたきで、ただ一本の木を探すことに費やしていたのだろうか。

この広い世界にあるたった一本を。
Only one in this wide world.
そんな一本が、この世界にあるものだろうか。
Is there such a book in this world?
蝉の考えることなど、誰にもわからない。
No one understands what Cicada thinks.
蝉が考える生き物かどうかも分からない。
I don't even know if a cicada is a living creature.
成虫としての短い寿命が終わると、蝉はアスファルトの上に落ちた。
After a short adult life, the cicada fell on the asphalt.
虫カゴを持った子供が、拾い上げて、捨てた。
A child with a bug basket picked it up and threw it away.
黒い蟻が群れをなして運んでいった。
