Chapter 6 Ryu and Girl's Summer Vacation Part 4
ハーピーと別れた後、狩りへと向かう事にした。
After parting with Harpy, I decided to go hunting.
「血と肉は好まないのではなかったのですか？」
"Did you not like blood and meat?"
狩りに向かうと言った私を、ニュージュは山猫のように目を吊り上げて睨んできた。
Nuju lifted his eyes like a wildcat and stared at me as I was heading for hunting.
「ああ、私は食べはせんよ。強き母と、その子供の為にだ」
"Oh, I don't eat. For my strong mother and her child."
ニュージュは訝しげに私を睨み続ける。
Newju continues to stare at me with glamor.
「まあ、付いて来れば解るさ」
"Well, if you follow me, you know."
私は空に向かって羽ばたいた。
I flapped towards the sky.
空からは獲物の姿がよく見える。前回と同種の巨牛の姿も目に止まったが、同じものばかりでは芸もない。何か別のものが良いだろう。
You can see the prey in the sky. I saw the same kind of giant cow as last time, but I can't do the same thing. Something else would be good.
目を凝らしながら地上を眺める。竜の卓越した視力は、雑草の種類や木々の葉っぱの形まで見分けられる。
Look at the ground with your eyes closed. The dragon's outstanding visual acuity can be distinguished even by the type of weed and the shape of the leaves of the trees.
小さな野池の水面に、不釣り合いな程の大物の魚影が揺らめいていた。
Disproportionately large fish shadows were shaking on the surface of a small pond.
確かラミアという種族は、魚も好んで食べるという話であったか。
Surely it was a story that the race called Lamia likes to eat fish as well.
私は空高くから狙いを定めると、池の中へと飛び込んだ。
I aimed high up in the sky and jumped into the pond.
大きな魚影の正体は、人間の大人よりも大きな特大のオオナマズであった。
The identity of the large fish shadow was an oversized giant catfish, larger than a human adult.
これほどの大きさならば一匹で十分だろう。仕留めた獲物を担ぎ上げ、ラミアの住む岩場へと向かう事にした。
If it's this size, one would be enough. I decided to carry up the prey that I caught and head for the rocky place where Lamia lives.
ニュージュは、自分の数倍はある巨大なナマズにしばらく目を丸くしていたが、名を呼ぶと、慌てて後をついてきた。
Newju had been blind to the giant catfish, which was several times larger than himself, but when he called his name, he rushed to follow.

「壮健か？ ラミアよ」
"Are you healthy? Lamia."
「竜の御方！ 貴方様のお陰で何一つ不自由なく過ごしておりました」
"Dragon dragon! Thanks to you, I was able to spend my time comfortably."
その言葉に偽りの無いことは、彼女の姿が証明していた。
Her appearance proved that the words were true.
前回彼女に与えた巨牛は彼女の体に確りと肉をつけていた。腹の子供も前回会った時よりも、更に大きくなっている。
The giant cow she gave her last time had her meat firmly attached to her body. The hungry child is even bigger than it was when I met him last time.
竜の縄張りの中にいることで外敵に怯える必要も無かったのだろう。
Being in the dragon's territory wouldn't have had to scare foreign enemies.
釣り目がちだった目尻は穏やかに下がり、一週間前に会った時よりも、随分と柔らかい印象を受けた。
The corners of the eyes, which tended to be fishing, fell gently, and I felt a lot softer than when I met a week ago.
紫色の長い髪は美しく梳かれてあり、彼女の本来の艶と輝きを取り戻していているように思えた。
The long purple hair was beautifully combed and seemed to regain her original luster and sheen.
「竜の御方…、そちらの人間は‥？」
"Dragon Lord..., who are you...?"
ラミアは私の隣にいたニュージュに気づくと油断なく構える。
When Lamia notices Newju next to me, she stands up.
魔法にも長けているラミアの事だ。少女の内からあふれる並外れた魔力を感じ取ったのだろう。
It's Lamia who is also good at magic. Perhaps he felt the extraordinary magic that overflowed from within the girl.
「ラミアよ、案ずるな。彼女は悪い人間ではない。貴方にも、貴方の子にも、害を加えるような真似はせんよ」

「そうですか、貴方様がそう仰られるのであれば安心でございます」
"Yes, it's safe if you say so."
そう言うと、ラミアは警戒を緩めた。
Then Lamia relaxed.
私への義理立てか、それとも本心からそう思っているのかは、私には解らなかったが。
I didn't know if it was a step toward me or if I really thought so.
「さてラミアよ。ナマズは好きか？」
"Well, Lamia. Do you like catfish?"
背中に背負ったオオナマズをラミアへと差し出すと、彼女は恥ずかしげに俯きながら、「はい」と答えた。
When he presented the catfish on his back to Lamia, she shyly replied, "Yes."
「気に入ってくれたようで私も嬉しいよ。では、一週間後にまた来よう」
"I'm glad you liked it, so let's come back a week later."
ナマズを手渡し、立ち去ろうとした私ではあったが、ラミアに呼び止められてしまった。
Although I was trying to leave the catfish and leave, I was stopped by Lamia.
今からナマズを焼くから、昼食を共にしないかと言うのだ。
I'm going to bake catfish from now on, so I'm asking you to join us for lunch.
折角の申し出ではあるが、樹液によって潤っている私はナマズ等には興味はない。
It's an offer, but I'm not interested in catfish because it's moistened with sap.
丁重にラミアの申し出を断ろうとして、そこでふと思い立った。
I politely refused Lamia's offer, and suddenly thought of it.

「私は良いから、この少女に馳走してやってくれぬか？」
"I'm good, can you treat this girl for me?"

「はいどうぞ、人間さん」
"Yes, human."
ラミアはそう言って、串にさした大きな一切れをニュージュへと差し出した。岩塩と胡椒の実と香草で味付けされたそれを、少女はおずおずと受け取った。
Lamia said, and presented a large piece of skewer to Newju. The girl picked it up, seasoned with rock salt, peppercorns and herbs.
ラミアの料理は見事な物だった。
Lamia's food was excellent.
黒曜石のナイフで手際よくナマズを三枚に下ろすと串に次々と刺していった。ナマズは寄生虫がつくことが在るらしく、生で食べるのは良くないらしい。
I slid the catfish into three pieces with an obsidian knife and stabbed the skewers one after another. It seems that catfish can get parasites, so it is not good to eat them raw.
ラミアは魔法でさっと火をおこすと。串に刺したナマズの肉を炎の周りに円形に並べ、いぶすように焼き上げていった。
Lamia magically creates a fire. The meat of the catfish stabbed on a skewer was arranged in a circle around the flame and baked like smoldering.
ポトポトと脂が落ち、その度に火が激しく燃え上がったが、それも計算の内なのだろう。カラリと焼けた表面が火で炙られる度に香ばしい匂いを放つと、私の鼻をくすぐった。
The oil slumped and the fire burned violently each time, but that's probably within the calculation. Every time the roaring surface burned with a scent of scent, it tickled my nose.
ラミアの料理がコレほどのものとは思わなかった。いつか私も、馳走になりたいものだと素直に思えた。
I didn't think Lamia's food was as good as this. Someday, I thought obediently that I wanted to be a treat.
今は樹液のみで生きている私ではあるが、いつまでも赤子のようにソレばかりを飲んでいるわけにもいかぬだろう。
I'm living only with sap now, but I can't say I'm always drinking sore like a baby.
今はもう少しユグドラシルの樹液に甘えて置きたい所だが、少しづつ乳離れをせねばならぬとは私とて思っていることだ。
Right now, I want to put it on Yggdrasil sap a little more, but I think that I must gradually wean.
ナマズの串焼きを受け取ったニュージュは、串の両端を手で持つ形で、最初は小さな小さな一口を、その後は夢中でナマズを食べ続けた。
Receiving the catfish skewers, Nuju, holding both ends of the skewers in his hands, first ate a small bite and then continued to eat the catfish.
余程腹が空いていたのか？ と思ったが、どうやらそういうわけでは無いらしい。少女の瞳からはポロポロと涙が溢れ落ちていた。

あっという間に串を丸裸にしてしまった少女に、ラミアは無言で、串焼きをもう一本手渡した。

「美味しいか？ ニュージュよ」

私の質問に、ニュージュはぶんぶんと首を上下に振って、

と泣いていた。

その様は、まるでこれが美味しいという言葉の意味なのだと、初めて理解しているようにも見えた。
It seemed like the first time I understood that this was the meaning of the word delicious.
彼女が今までどんな食事を摂ってきたのかは私にはわからぬが、食の喜びとは縁遠いシロモノばかり食べて来たのであろうことは、容易に想像はついた。
I don't know what kind of food she has eaten up until now, but it was easy to imagine that she would have eaten only white things that were far from the pleasure of eating.

ニュージュが二本目の串を食べ終わった頃を見計らい、私はラミアに尋ねる。
Waiting for Newju to finish eating the second skewer, I ask Lamia.
「ラミアよ、腹の子は元気か？」
"Lamia, how are you doing?"
「はい、おかげさまですくすくと育っております。あと一週間もすれば産まれるのではないかと」
"Yes, I'm growing up thanks to you. I think I'll be born in another week."
「ほう！ ほう！ それは素晴らしい！ 赤子が楽しみであるな！」
"Wow! Hou! That's wonderful! Look forward to the baby!"
ラミアは卵を産んだ後、それを膣の中で育てる卵胎生の生き物である。
Lamia is an embryonic creature that lays eggs and then raises them in the vagina.
生まれてくる子供は親と同じ姿で生まれてくる。彼女の子供であれば、きっとかわいい赤子が産まれるであろう。
A child is born with the same appearance as the parent. If she were a child, she would surely have a cute baby.
「…赤ちゃん？」
"…Baby?"
ニュージュは私とラミアを見比べながらそう言った。
Newju said that while comparing me with Lamia.
…ふむ、どうやら勘違いをしてしまっているようだ。私が否定しようとすると、先にラミアが口を開いた。
…Hmm, it looks like I'm misunderstanding. When I tried to deny, Lamia said first.
「残念ながら、竜のお方の子供ではありません。もしそうであったならばもっと幸せになれたでしょうにと、そう思ったことは何度かありますが」
"Unfortunately, I'm not the dragon's child. I've had a few thoughts that I would have been happier if I were."
ラミアはそう言いながら私に微笑みかけた。妖しい唇の端を僅かに持ち上げながら。
Lamia smiled at me, saying so. While slightly lifting the ends of mysterious lips.
ラミアの冗談は、私には少し過激にすぎる。
Lamia's joke is a bit too radical for me.
「赤ちゃん、ここにいるの？」
"Baby, are you here?"
ニュージュの目はラミアの腹に釘付けになっていた。ラミアの大きく膨らんだ腹に。
Newju's eyes were nailed to Lamia's belly. On the big bulge of Lamia.
「触ってみますか？ 人間さん」
"Do you want to touch it? Humans"
「えっ？ い、いいの…？」
ラミアが微笑みながら頷く。子供とは言え人間の子に腹を触らせるなど、ラミアは既にニュージュのことを信頼しているようだ。
Lamia nods with a smile. It seems that Lamia already trusts Newju, such as touching the belly of a human child, albeit a child.
ニュージュは恐る恐ると、脆いガラスでも触るかのように、ラミアの腹をなでた。
Newju, terribly, patted Lamia's belly, as if touching fragile glass.
球状に膨れたラミアの腹は、安い言葉ではあるが生命の神秘を感じさせる。
The spherical belly of Lamia is a cheap word, but it feels the mystery of life.
「あっ、今ドンって」
"Oh, now don"
「ふふふっ、最近よく蹴るのですよ。以前はその元気も無かったのですけどね。優しい方のお陰なのです。…竜のお方も、よろしければ是非触ってくださいまし」
"Fufufu, I've been kicking a lot lately. I used to have no energy before, but thanks to the gentle person... If you don't mind, please contact the dragon."
私はニュージュの手の平の反対側から、人差し指の指先だけでラミアの腹に触れる。
From the other side of Nuju's palm, I touch Lamia's belly with just the tip of my index finger.
トンッという、軽い振動が私の指にも伝わった。なるほど、確かに元気な子だ。
A slight vibration was transmitted to my finger. I see, she's definitely a healthy child.

「あっ‥、また、ドンって」

少女を見下ろすラミアの瞳は、まるでもう一人の娘を慈しんでいるような、母の瞳だった。
The eyes of Lamia overlooking the girl were the eyes of her mother, as if she was beloved by another daughter.
