朝の食事を終え、今日も今日とてトーテムポールの製作に出かけようとしていた私に、ユグドラシルはそう語りかけた。

彼女の示す方角を振りかえると、腹からちゃぽんと音が立った。

昨日の決意もむなしく、私は今朝も存分にユグドラシルの樹液を堪能してしまった。

生贄たちが閉じ込められている筈の、３メートルほどの横長の箱は、中の人間が逃げ出したり海に身をなげたりすることを防ぐためであろう、鎖で外から厳重に封をされていた。

魔導師に問われた男が、苦しげに返答した。

魔導師の独演のただ一人の観客は、法王ピオ２世。すなわち、この聖都の長とされる人物である。

"I need a sacrifice to evoke the miracle of God. I did some mercy to that girl, but if I would lose my life to save the World Tree, what is my desire. But we have to stop the realization of the prophecy: “Visit from outside the world, the disaster, break the shell, eat all the stars…”

後の句はピオが続けた。聖樹が星の代わりに血を流す。すなわち、世界の崩壊を聖樹ユグドラシルが身代わりとなり引き受けるであろうという予言の結末を。

世界は世界樹を失うかわりに、長い繁栄のときを迎えるという約束は、政治との結びつきによって腐敗した信仰にとっては大いなる福音となった。

法王は手紙の主に密かに、しかしできうる限りの援助を約束した。

そして、法王のみが鍵をもつことが許される場所、古代兵器が納められた部屋へと魔導師を導いた。

その後今から一月ほど前に、魔導師は約束どおり、尋常ならざる魔力をもったヴァルキュリアの槍の使い手を作りあげた。

ここ数十年、一人も現われることがなかったヴァルキュリアの槍の使い手を。

もっとも、その使い手がまだ幼き少女であることには、流石にピオ２世も驚きを隠せなかった。

少女に向かって涙を流しながら「すまない、すまない」と繰り返す法王を前にしても、心を失った少女の瞳が揺れることはなかった。
