Chapter 4 Dragon will soon leave the nest 4
翌朝、目が覚めた私はまっすぐに新たな巣に向かうことにした。
The next morning I woke up and decided to head straight to my new nest.
どうもここ数日、誰かに合うたびにことが上手く運び過ぎるきらいがある。
For the past few days, every time I met someone, I hate doing too well.
これまで色々と手を加えては来たものの、トイレまでつくってしまえば流石に巣は完成である。それ以外に必要なものなど、もはや竜の知恵をもってしても思いつかない。
Although we have made a lot of changes to date, once the toilet is built, the nest is complete. I can't think of anything else that I need, even with the wisdom of a dragon.
今回は誰にも相談せず、一人で作業を進めるべきだと、そう考えた。
I thought that I should work alone without consulting anyone this time.
さて、今から巣の傍にトイレを作るわけなのだが、これがそう簡単にはいかぬものだ。
Now, I'm going to build a toilet near the nest, but it's not that easy.
何が難しいかと言うと、上水道と下水道、２種類の水の道を作らねばならぬからだ。穴をほってハイおしまいでは芸がない。
What is difficult is that we have to create two types of water paths: water supply and sewer. There is no trick in leaving a hole and ending high.
快適な家を作るためには、手間などは惜しんではいけない。また、上水道は飲み水や体を拭く水にも利用ができるだろう。
Do not spare time and effort to make a comfortable house. The water supply could also be used for drinking water or wiping water.
最初の問題は、いかにして綺麗な水を確保するかにある。
The first issue is how to get clean water.
近くの川から水を引いてきてもよいのだが、あまりたくさんの水を引き寄せてしまうと川に住む生き物たちの生態系にも影響を及ぼしてしまうかもしれない。
You may draw water from a nearby river, but if you draw too much water, it may affect the ecosystem of the creatures that live in the river.
それに、雨季で川が氾濫してしまうと巣まで水浸しになる恐れもある。

となると、地下水を掘るのが最良の選択ではあるのだが、果たしてどうやって地下水を掘り当てればよいものか…。

そんな事を考えていた時に、ふと背中に視線を感じた。遠い岩陰から、誰かがこちらをこっそりとうかがっているようだ。

巣の前で、私とゲーコさんは微妙な距離感を保ちながら、差し向かいに座っている。

私達の間には重い空気が横たわっている。まるで空気に鉛でも混じっているかのように息苦しい。

私からゲーコさんに語る言葉は思いつかなかったし、ゲーコさんもまた、私に伝えるべき言葉を見つけられないのだろう。
I couldn't come up with a word to tell Gecko, and he couldn't find the words to tell me.
わたしたちはただ、沈黙を続けることしかできなかった。
We could only keep silent.
間を持て余し、視線は自然に彷徨ってしまう。

ゲーコさんは前にあった時よりも随分痩せてしまっていた。皮膚も乾き両生類特有のぬめりを失ってしまっている。

ゲーコさんの体に雄の印を認めてしまったあの時、私は喚きながらその場を逃げ去ってしまった。ゲーコさんに、なんの言葉も残すこともなく。

あれはなんと卑劣な侮辱ではなかっただろうか？

生き物は、必ずしもその身体的性別と精神的性質が一致するとは限らない。

蝉の魂と竜の肉体を持つ私が、なぜゲーコさんの苦しみを理解しようとはしなかったのだろうか？

私にはゲーコさんを妻とすることはできない。
I can't have Mr. Geko as my wife.
しかし、同じ種類の悩みを持つものとして、友となることはできたのではないだろうか。
However, I think we could have become friends with the same kind of worries.
私は自身を省みる、省みて、今何をするべきか考えた。
I reflect myself, reflect on and think what to do now.
そして、考えるまでもないことに気がついた。私がゲーコさんの為にできる事など、たった一つしかないのだから。
And I realized that I didn't have to think about it. There's only one thing I can do for Gecko.

歌を歌おう。親愛と友情の歌を。
Let's sing a song Dear and friendship song.
言葉なんていらない。音が、詩が、旋律が、我らの友情を繋いでくれる筈だから。
I don't need words. Because sound, poetry, and melody should connect our friendships.
「ゲーコゲコゲコゲコ…」
ゲーコさんも歌を返す。
Geko also returns the song.
しかしあの時のような低く力強い音ではなく、どこか恐る恐るといった風合いのものだ。ゲーコさんの歌は自信と力をすっかり無くしてしまっていた。
However, it is not a low and powerful sound like that time, but a kind of scary texture. Geko's song had completely lost her confidence and power.
こんなにもゲーコさんを追い詰めてしまった自分が情けない。
I'm miserable that I've hunted down Gecko so much.

真の友には性別など関係ない。

われらはこれから友になるのだ。我らは友になれるはずだ。

どうした、友よ？ お前のうたはそんなものではないだろう？

奏でるものは挑発の旋律、音楽とは合わせるだけではつまらない、時には反発しあってこそ、新しい音楽が生まれるのだ。

私の音に、ゲーコは寸分たがわず付いてくる。

自然と口に笑みが浮かぶ。

やはりゲーコは本物だ。私の音に付いて来て、あるいは凌ぐことすら可能なのは、目の前の友、いや、強敵（とも）ただ一人なのだから。
After all, the game is real. Because it is the only friend in front of me, no, a strong enemy (or), who can follow or even surpass my sound.

気がつけば、私達は大地に横たわって大声で笑っていた。

その後、われらは他愛もないおしゃべりをする。

今、トイレを作っている最中なのだと話すと、ゲーコは自分にも手伝わせて欲しいと名乗りでてくれた。

トイレは一人で作るつもりだったのだが、友の厚意を無碍にするわけにもいかぬだろう。わたしが「では頼む」とお願いすると、ゲーコは任せてくれと、胸を張った。
I was going to make the toilet by myself, but I wouldn't let the friend's kindness go away. When I asked, "I'll ask you," Gaeko took pity on me.
ゲーコは巣の周りの幾つかの場所でうつ伏せになり、何かを探り当てるかのように大地に耳を当てていった。
Geko fell prone in several places around the nest, listening to the earth as if to find something.
私はただ、ゲーコの邪魔をしないよう、息を潜めて見守るだけだ。
I just hold my breath and watch so I don't get in the way of the game.
ゲーコは、なんどかそれを繰り返した後に、とある場所で立ち止まった。
Gecko stopped at a certain place after repeating it somehow.
するとゲーコの口に、いや‥、舌にか？ 力強い魔力が込められているのが私にはわかった。
Then, to Gecko's mouth, no... tongue? I found that it contained powerful magic.
ゲーコの舌先が青白く輝き始める。そしてそのまま‥

気合の一声とともにゲーコの舌がうねりを上げながらドリルのように伸びて行く。

赤い舌が、削岩音を上げながら厚い岩盤を突き破っていく。

ギュルギュルと伸びていくそれは、果たしてどれほどの長さになっているのか、想像もできない。
I can't imagine how long it is, which is growing steadily.
暫くして、ゲーコがニヤリと笑うと、ようやく舌が巻き戻り始めた。
After a while, Gecko grinned and his tongue began to rewind.
最後に舌が口の中に収まったと同時に、なんと、大量の水が地面から溢れ出てきた。
Finally, when my tongue settled in my mouth, a lot of water overflowed from the ground.
驚く私を尻目に、ゲーコはそこから少し離れた場所に移動して、もう一度同じように舌で地面をえぐった。

最初の穴から溢れでて出てきた水は２つ目の穴に吸い込まれて流れていった。

一体何をしたのかと尋ねると、一つ目の穴は地下にある水脈とつないだと。

そして二つ目の穴は排水用に、１キロほど離れた場所にある川まで伸ばしたのだと言う。

ゲーコの言葉には驚くしかなかった。

ゲーコはまさかあれだけのことで、この巣に上水道と下水道を通してしまったというのか。

あとは適当に大地を掘れば、トイレでも風呂でも簡単に作る事ができるだろう。

私はゲーコを褒め称える。歌だけではなくこんな特技まで持っていたとは。

I answered.
ゲーコは、他にも穴を掘りたくなったらいつでも私の力になると言い残して、自らの巣へと帰っていった。ゲーコのような友がいて、私は本当に幸せ者だ。
Gecko returned to his nest, saying he would help me whenever I wanted to dig another hole. I have a friend like Gecko and I am really happy.

その後は一人で作業を続けた。
After that, I continued working alone.
上水道と下水道を溝でしっかりとつなぎ、その間に大小３つの穴を掘る。
Connect the water supply and the sewer firmly with a groove, and dig three large and small holes between them.
一番上の小さな穴が水飲み場。２番目の大きな穴が体を洗うための水おけ用。３番目の中くらいの穴が排泄用だ。

ゲーコがもっとも大変な作業をしてくれたおかげで、２時間もたたぬうちにそれは完成した。

巨人たちの作った立派な門に比べれば、お世辞にも恰好のよいものではなかったが、まあ、及第点と言えるだろう。

こうして、巣を作り始めて僅か４日。

楽しく、学ぶことも多く、友も増え、非常に凝縮された４日間であったが、私の新しい巣は遂に完成した。
After four days of fun, learning, more friends and a very condensed four days, my new nest was finally completed.
